Why Women in Leadership Over-Give, Over-Function, and Still Feel ‘Not Enough’

A while ago, I sat with a group of high-achieving women — CEOs, coaches, executives, and entrepreneurs — women who had built incredible careers.

Before long, I started to hear questions I didn’t expect.

“Why do I still feel like I have to prove myself, no matter what I achieve?”
“Why do I give so much and rarely feel supported in return?”
“Why do I feel like I’m either ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’ — never just right?”

These were women who looked like they had it all.
They were thriving — on paper.
The reality was very different.
They were tired, overextended, and questioning their worth.

At first I just listened.

And then, I saw the pattern.

Women in leadership aren’t just dealing with stress. They’re dealing with something deeper.

The more successful you become, the more pressure there is to prove you deserve it.
The higher you climb, the harder it is to set boundaries — because now, everyone depends on you.

The more you accomplish, the more exhausting it is to carry the weight of expectations, responsibilities, and perfectionism.

And while this is true of any successful person…
Men don’t need to have these kinds of conversations.

When a man is direct, he’s seen as strong.
When a woman is direct, she’s called “intimidating.”

When a man sets a boundary, it’s respected.
When a woman sets a boundary, she’s labeled “difficult.”

When a man takes a step back, it’s called strategy.
When a woman does the same, it’s seen as weakness.

But that’s not the biggest difference…

Men are conditioned to lead from self-trust.
Women are conditioned to lead from proving their worth.
